- Thunder. Thunder is known as being the largest fireworks display in North America. We rented a booth for the day at Buckhead Bar and Grill and our booth was right at the window so we had a great view. That's the only way to do it! They featured an air show before the fireworks. Accompanying Tim and I were his mom Joan and his daughter Erin.
- Buffalo Trace Distillery. I have to admit that I just loved this distillery. It was 110 acres with 110 buildings! It's one of the oldest distillery in Kentucky and the grounds were gorgeous (not to mention their bourbons and vodkas are great!) We'll definitely return when we go back to Kentucky. The tour guide was excellent too and was a third generation employee with all the charm of the south east. It was fascinating learning about bourbons, such as the ABC's of bourbon: A stands for no artificial chemicals, B is for barrel (only virgin white oak can be used, middle of the tree and at least 70 years old) and C is for corn. They are adding a restaurant, which I am sure will be just as marvelous as the rest of the estate. A note on some of the pictures here. If you can pick it out, several of the pictures are of painted walls and if you’re looking at these murals at the distillery and move side to side, the image always places you in the center of the image, which is as if you were looking down the center isle of a bourbon storage building. To get the full effect, you have to see the image in person.
- Cemeteries. The cemeteries in Kentucky are nothing short of marvelous. We went to several but Cave Hill was my favorite. Not only was it stunning but it's also one of the largest in the world. Colonel Sanders is buried here but we didn't find his grave. Next time!
- Parent's House. Tim and I had a great time visiting his mom and dad. We also helped out around the place in between our excursions. His parents Joan and Charles live in an A-frame on the Ohio River that Tim built starting when he was 20 years old and finishing at age 23. It still stands strong even after it was flooded in 1997 all the way up to the second story!
- Kentucky Horse Park. If you're going to go to Kentucky you have to go see the Horse Park. Some of the legends are buried here (Man-O-War and Secratariat). They also have many breeds to view, history to partake in and some nice grounds to walk.
- Opry. I had no idea this place was so large! It was acres of detailed gardens, water features, orchids, restaurants and shops and ALL covered by an atrium! Tim's mom treated us to a night there for Tim's birthday and it was just gorgeous.
